GREEN, Dr. Saul, FRCS, FACS 83, Halifax, died peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 15, 2005, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. He had been ill for several weeks and spent the last week in hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Morris and Annie Green. A graduate in medicine from Dalhousie University in 1945, he opened up a family practice in Halifax with his late brother, Dr. Leo Green. He was a dedicated and compassionate family doctor and general surgeon who cared deeply for his patients and their families. He served as a physician in the Canadian Armed Forces at the end of the Second World War. He was a charter member of the Shaar Shalom Synagogue. Saul Green had a passion for sports, and during his life competed in badminton, tennis, golf, squash, and was captain of the Dalhousie varsity basketball team. He had a special love of the water, and enjoyed a lifetime of swimming with his family, either at the beach, the old Northwest Arm Club or the Waegwoltic Club in Halifax. He enjoyed a wonderful camaraderie with childhood friends, fellow doctors and, most of all, his family. He loved his family above all else. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Roselle (Katz); children, Marcia and Steve Aronson, Ottawa; Susan and Gerry Goodman, Toronto; Howard Green and Lynne Heller, Toronto; and Morris, Halifax; brother, Allan (Margaret), Halifax; sister, Bessie (Artie), Montreal; grandson, Michael (Dawn), and granddaughter, Rachel, Toronto; sister-in-law, Pinnie Green. He was predeceased by his brothers, Chief Judge Nathan Green and Dr. Leo Green. A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Shaar Shalom Synagogue, 1981 Oxford St., Halifax. At the family's request, no Shiva will be held. Visitors are welcome this afternoon and evening, and all day on Thursday at the home of Saul and Roselle Green, 6369 Coburg Road. Donations may be made to the Shaar Shalom Synagogue or Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation. Thanks to all the paramedics and QEII Emergency Department staff who cared for Dad this past week. Thanks also to the wonderful staff on 8.4 who cared for Dad so compassionately. A final special thanks to each and every wonderful soul in the QEII dialysis unit who cared for Dad and Roselle during the past several years. Published in the Ottawa Citizen on 3/16/2005
