Francis Fred Patrick THOMPSON

THOMPSON, Francis Fred Patrick (Pat) M.D. Pat, in his 97th year, passed away peacefully, in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (General) on Thursday, January 29, 2004. Born on March 17th, 1907, in Penetanguishene, Ontario, he spent all of his early years in that locale. Following graduation from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, in 1934, Pat interned at East General and Christie Street Hospitals in Toronto. He then practised for a short period of time in the Sioux Lookout and Kenora area before coming to Port Arthur in 1936 to intern at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1937 he married Madge Pittman of Kenora. They settled in Port Arthur where he established a permanent medical practice. Pat was a dedicated physician and surgeon for 50 years endearing himself to his many patients whom he served with devotion and care. In recognition of this outstanding service to medicine and interest in his community he was awarded the Glen Sawyer Award by the Ontario Medical Association in 1976. Also, for his exceptional achievements, he was honoured with The Citizen of Thunder Bay Award in 1985. These accomplishments included: Charter member of the Port Arthur Kinsmen Club; a founding member and director of the YM-YWCA; honourary member and medical officer of St. John Ambulance Brigade; district coroner for 20 years; lifetime member of the OMA and CMA; Past-President of the Port Arthur Medical Society; a founding member of the Medical Arts Building; Rector's Warden and advisory board member of St. John's Anglican Church; honourary life member of the Progressive Conservative Association; active supporter of the Thunder Bay Historical Society; and member of the Thunder Bay Lodge A.F. & A.M. Pat's diverse interests, which inspired his family and friends, included a love of history, politics, travel, photography, theatre, music and sports. He particularly enjoyed camp life at Two Island Lake. Lovingly remembered by his children: Margaret (Bruce) Aris of Thunder Bay; Peter (Fran) Thompson of Ottawa; Daphne (Ken) Clark of Sarnia; grandchildren: Shawn (Fiona) Aris; Doug (Heather) Aris; Shelly Aris; Tim (Alison) Thompson; Tracey Thompson (Michael Crystal); Joel (Kelly) Clark; Ryan and Danielle Clark; great grandchildren: Hugh, Dylan & Keefer Aris; Devan & Aidan Aris; Julia & James Crystal; and Celia Clark; plus several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his wife Madge in 1997; parents Charles & Maria; siblings Dr. A. A. (Alfred) Thompson of Mount Clemens; B.B. (Beatrice) in infancy; Mr. C. C. (Cornwall) of Hamilton; D.D. (Douglas) in infancy; Dr. E. E. (Ted) of Lisbon, New York; Miss G.G. (Gwendolyn) of Penetanguishene; and Dr. H. H. (Hugh) of Stratford. Visitation for friends will be held on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2nd when family and friends will gather in St. John's Anglican Church, Pearl Street, for services beginning at 1:00 p.m. to be officiated by The Rev. Paul F. Walmsley. Internment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
