Martin Richard HUBBARD

Peacefully, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, after a brief period of illness, December 20th, 2003 age 64. Born in Southgate, England, on May 25th, 1939 and lived in the United Kingdom until his immigration to Canada, in 1968. During the ensuing 35 years, Martin lived both in Appleton, and in Ottawa - however, he often commented that his dream home would be a small cottage on the east coast of Labrador amidst the wind, spray and cold weather. Loving brother to Julia (Preston), and uncle to Guy and Olivia, who reside in England. Lovingly remembered by stepson, James, daughter-in-law, Marcia and grandson, Matthew - Martin will be deeply missed. Mourned by Ruth Hubbard, his spouse from whom he was separated for many years. Martin was educated in England - he received his Master's Degree from Magdalen College at Oxford University, and had a particular interest in 'medical record linkage'. He became a Federal public servant in 1968 and worked at Statistics Canada until his retirement in 1993. Lifelong interests included books, computers, photography and theology - these were discussed frequently, often in the same sentence. Martin served as a lay reader for many years at St. James' Anglican Church, Carleton Place. During his retirement, he founded Maximillicat Enterprises - a company through which he ran a website, and undertook amateur candid event photography. Martin also had a longstanding involvement in hosting religious discussion fora via the internet. Family and friends are invited to visit in remembrance, in lieu of formal services, at the Riverside Pub - a second home to Martin in recent years, as well as a source of deep comradeship (and, according to rumours, deep theological debate.) Visitation will be held at the pub (3673 Riverside Drive) on Tuesday, December 30th, 2003 between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to local libraries or literacy agencies. For now we see in a mirror, darkly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity (I Corinthians 13:12-13).
