Dr. John Higgins died in Collingwood Ontario, after a long illness, June 14, 2005. Born on August 25, 1921, in Burlington, Ontario, Dr. Higgins was a family physician in Englehart for almost 40 years, and a long-time resident of the area. He was educated at Western University, and married Catherine McQueen in Kirkland Lake October 30, 1948. Dr. Higgins had a lifelong passion for learning and classical music. He was fortunate to find a place to work and raise a family, that cared for him while he in turn took care of them. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine Higgins, and his parents Sarah and William Higgins. Dr. Higgins is survived by his sister Flora Sloski, children Kathryn Oukes, Jacquie Kirkey, Sandy Higgins, John Higgins, grandchildren Ben and Tara Kirkey, Nathan and Brandon Oukes, and Mackenzie Higgins. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home of Englehart, and a memorial service was conducted by Reverend Blake Carter, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Englehart, on June 17, 2005. Pallbearers were Nathan Oukes, Max Brown, Bob and Wayne Thomas. Burial was at the Englehart Cemetery. Memorial donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association will be appreciated by the family.
