PAYNE, Arthur Garfield - Peacefully at the Henderson General Hospital on Friday, January 11, 2008, Art, in his 78th year, lost his courageous six month battle with lung cancer. Survived by his loving wife of 55 years Fay (nee Cowles) and his eight children, son Allan and Carol (nee Krouse), daughter Marion and Glenn Shaw, son Arthur and Diane (nee Shaw), son John and Jeanette (nee Misner), daughter Margie and Richard Rodrigues, daughter Mary and George Davidson, son Jim and Marlene (nee Vanderveer) and son Mike and Connie (nee Fisher). Proud grandfather to 22 grandchildren and their spouses and special friends and great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all. Left behind are his sisters Irene Adams (Boulder, Co), Rita Tyson (Victoria, B.C.), Jessie McKee (Hamilton), Dorothy Debicki (Hamilton) and Shirley Lacouter (Hamilton) as well sister-in-law Doreen Jonathan (Hamilton), brothers-in-law John Cowles (Niagara-on-the-Lake), Delmar Cowles (Hamilton) and Larry Cowles (Stoney Creek). Predeceased by his sister Violet Straton, Ruby Smith and brother Archie Payne. Art was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and moved to Hamilton as a young man. Not long after that he met Fay and they quickly started a family. Their first home was in Fruitland (Stoney Creek) in the early '50s. The family was quickly expanding and there was a need for a large home, so in 1957 they purchased a farm in the Lynden area, where they raised their family over the next 35 years. Art worked at Stelco for 31 years as a Stationary Engineer and was commonly known as the “Farmer“ by all of his Coke Ovens co-workers. He retired in 1988 and enjoyed many trips with Fay to Hawaii and travelling throughout Canada and the U.S., visiting their many relatives and friends. Art had two favourite expressions “Hard work never hurt anyone“ and “Ah, get out of here“, both will be sadly missed by all the family and friends. A special thanks to Uncle John C. for the care that he gave and continues to give to his big sister during these difficult times. The family would like to thank all of the nurses on ward 3E for all of their support and Dr. M. Ganphum for her openness and care. In keeping with Art's wishes, there will be a private family funeral at DODSWORTH & BROWN FUNERAL HOME in Ancaster on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 2 p. m. A celebration of his life will be held at the Winchester Arms, 120 King Street, Dundas on January 15th from 4 to 8 p. m. for friends and relatives to drop by and exchange fond memories. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. 10958844
