She was born on August 6, 1921 to Frank and Marjorie (nee Tester) Clough-Ormiston, in Pembroke, Ontario and was the older sister to the late Dr. Michael Ormiston. During her childhood, she spent time in Ontario, Indiana and Kentucky before attending school in England. She graduated from Ashford School and earned a full scholarship to King's College in London where she received her B.Sc. in Geography and Physics as well as her A.K.C. She attended university during WWII enduring the Blitz in London, and she volunteered for the Auxiliary Territorial Service and drove an ambulance in London in 1943. Marie enjoyed the North and often recalled fondly her experiences teaching north of Kapuskasing in Smokey Falls, Ontario in a one-room schoolhouse in 1947. In 1948 she married Graham B. Medley in Toronto and in 1952 they moved to Onaping, Ontario where they raised their 6 children John, Michael, Virginia, Andrew, and twins Quintus and Marjorie alongside other early residents who, in sharing this adventure became lifelong friends. She later described this time in Onaping as the happiest years of her life. She loved the arts, especially classical music and live theatre and she was a long-time supporter of the Sudbury Theatre Centre.
