ROSE, Muriel Catherine "Auntie Moo" - South Maitland, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2008, in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, at the age of 88, with her niece, Florence and Florence's husband, Fred, by her side. Muriel, a daughter of the late Maxwell and Florence (O'Neill) Beattie, was born in South Maitland and continued to reside there for the majority of her life. She was left a widow at the early age of 28 when she lost the love of her life, Norman Rose. She was a member of the United Church of Canada and UCW. She was nicknamed "Auntie Moo" by the family but many who knew her also referred to her simply as "Auntie Moo". She was a waitress throughout most of her active life and prided herself in her long-time service at the House of Hay Restaurant in Shubenacadie. Muriel took on the task of learning to drive in her early 50s which she always considered one of her greatest accomplishments in life. Muriel loved to dance, especially round waltzes and polkas. She was a wonderful cook and was always baking and giving to charity. Muriel's main mission in life was to give freely of her time to visit with the elderly or the sick and to care for others. She is survived by her niece, Florence (Beattie) Benere, and nephew, Ray Beattie who considered her a "second mother", as she helped raise both after the loss of their mother, Abbie, at the tender age of 24. Florence's children, Denise, Melanie, and Pamela, and Ray's children, Shane and Troy, also considered her more like a grandmother to them than an aunt. She is also survived by her brother, Douglas Beattie, Truro; sister, Ruth Fairbrother, Windsor, Ont., and several other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Rose; sisters, Olive (Allan) Lawrence, Blanche (Almon) Gilby, and brother, Roy Beattie. The family wishes to extend our thanks to her caregivers at Cedarstone Enhanced Care for the excellent and loving care received during her stay. Special thanks are also extended to the palliative care volunteers who so graciously gave of their time to sit with Muriel. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today in Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, where the funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m. with Wayne Yorke, L.P.M. officiating. Interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, but in special tribute to "Auntie Moo", we ask that each one of you visit someone who is elderly, lonely or in need of a hug.
