MALONE, Genevieve (nee Thompson) - In her 95th year, peacefully at home on Sunday, June 1, 2008. Beloved wife of Edward (deceased); dear mother of Carol Ann Pagnucco (late Joseph), Colleen Kurtz (Larry), Erin Heineman, Karen Allard (Jean- Marie), Paddy Gartshore (Leo) and Michael (Patricia Ortega). Cherished grandmother of 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and aunt to many nieces and nephews. Born January 2, l914 Gen spent her long and fruitful life in Sault Ste. Marie. A piano accompanist and church organist from her early teens, Gen met and married singer Ed Malone and together they were organist and choirmaster at Blessed Sacrament and Precious Blood parishes for over 50 years. In July 2006, Gen and Ed celebrated seventy years of marriage. It was a union infused and sustained by their shared Christian values and life of worship. And it informed the rich family life of which they were the very heart. With her enormous energy and drive, Gen was the hub of a busy, bustling home, rehearsing music, sewing, cooking, decorating, gardening, and entertaining, all of which she accomplished with flair and without fuss. Gen's musical skills were exceptional. She was a first-rate sight-reader, a fluid improviser and transposer, and a sensitive, supportive accompanist to generations of performers in the Kiwanis festivals, conservatory exams, variety and fashion shows, concerts and community events. Music was the natural extension of her family life into the community at large. After raising and educating their six children, Ed and Gen travelled the world in the 1960s and 70s. At home they continued their community work well into their eighties, with meals on wheels, hospital visitations and prayer groups. Following Ed's death in January 2007, and with deteriorating health, Gen faced her remaining days with her usual discretion, grace and equanimity. We are grateful for her splendid example. The family wishes to thank Dr. F. Ianni and the palliative care team, including the Community Care Access personnel, Comcare Health Services, the Red Cross Community Health Services, Angel Associates Algoma, and especially Rosemary Routh, Debbie Thomlinson and Lea Theberge for their gentle and attentive care. Friends may call at the NORTHWOOD FUNERAL HOME (942 Great Northern Road 945-7758) on Wednesday, June 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Precious Blood Cathedral on Thursday, June 5 at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Bernard Burns officiating. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
