Ahokas (nee Kammonen), Vieno 2008-07-29 Mrs. Vieno Kaarina Ahokas passed away at her residence at Dawson Court on Saturday, July 26. She was born in Pero, Finland on November 19, 1921, one of ten children. She married her husband, Vilho, in 1945 and came to Canada in 1955 with him and her two sons, Hannu and Ilpo. Vieno continued her occupation as a baker, a profession which she had learned in Finland. She worked at Kangas and Kivela Bakeries among others. This interest in baking lead her to become the head cook at several bush camps in the Thunder Bay area. Besides Thunder Bay, Vieno lived in Toronto, Nakina, and several places in BC. Vieno had a long time interest in her faith. She was an active member in Saalem Church until her health deteriorated to the point that she could only attend services at Dawson Court. Her interest in gardening was evident in the many beautiful flowers in her yard, wherever she was living at the time. But most importantly, her main interest was her family. Vieno‘s strength carried her family through difficult economic times. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed her pulla, korvapuustis, and rice piirakkas. She was predeceased by her parents Anna and Simo Kammonen and eight of her siblings. She is survived by her husband, Vilho, sons Hannu (Maureen), Ilpo (Sharon) of Nanaimo, her grandchildren John (Kim) of Orangeville, Kevin (Kristi) of Oakville, Arlene (Phil) Brown, Graeme (Stephanie) of Calgary, Jason (Amanda) of Nanaimo, and Katherine of Toronto, her great-grandchildren Daniel, Kai, Abigail, and Kirra and her sister, Sivi. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 2008 at the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street beginning at 9:30 am. Interment in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel. Should friends desire, donations to the Alzheimer‘s Society would be appreciated.
