BUCHANAN, Richard Dolph - “Dick” passed away peacefully with dignity and courage while surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday July 29, 2008 at the age of 76 after an extended but devastating battle with cancer. Richard is survived by his loving and dedicated family, daughter Debbie, sons Rick (Richard) and Randy, sisters Stephanie (David) and Barbara. Also grandsons Jamie Buchanan, Jason and his wife Line, granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Keith, nephew Ryan, and great grandchildren. Mr. Buchanan was the President and owner of radio stations CKPC AM (1380) and CKPC FM (92.1). He purchased CKPC in the mid-seventies from his mother, Florence Buchanan. Under his ownership, CKPC expanded from it's meagre 5-watt power in Preston, Ontario in the mid-twenties to a powerhouse 25- thousand watts on “AM” and 80 thousand watts on “FM”. A devoted broadcaster, Mr. Buchanan almost always bucked the popular “cost cutting” trends of the industry, insisting on 24-7 live local programming with strong news and information ingredients. One of his proudest accomplishments was the building and establishing of a strong news department. Again ignoring the slashing of staff and services, Mr. Buchanan expanded his news department to the extent it is now one of the largest of any privately-owned radio stations in Ontario. He will also be fondly remembered for recognizing raw talent and honing them into mature top-notch broadcasters. Many of these people went on to outstanding careers in bigger markets. Such people as Hugh Bremner, Bill Brady, Charlie Doering and Baden Langton. Dick was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. Another one of his great passions was the ownership of standard bred horses. He enjoyed the “winner's circle” many times over the years as an owner. In his earlier years he had the pleasure of representing Canada at the World Curling Championship in Scotland in 1969. He was a member of Brant Masonic Lodge # 45 and the Brantford Shrine Club, Mocha Temple. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the many individuals that came into his life as he fought his extended battle with his cancer as well as the great nurses from Aberdeen Health Care. A memorial reception will be held at the Charing Cross Reception Suites adjacent to the DENNIS TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford on Thursday 6-9 p.m. A Masonic service will be held on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. under the auspices of the Brant Masonic Lodge. Cremation. Donations to the Sunshine Foundation, or Ducks Unlimited would be appreciated. www.dennistoll.ca 11182943
