George Noel HURST

HURST, George Noel December 17, 1928 - September 4, 2008 We sadly announce the passing of George Hurst, our beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend. George is survived by his loving wife Ruth (Bieber) of forty-nine years; three children, Lori Thomas (Tony), Jeff Hurst and Sandra Fisher (Steve); four very special grandchildren, Amanda and Melanie Thomas and Michael and Matthew Fisher. George was one of four children born to Margaret and Joseph Hurst of High River and is survived by his brother, Bill (Faye) and sister, Vera Bevan. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Margaret Graham. George was born in High River in 1928 and grew up on the family farm east and south of High River. During his teen years he belonged to the Army Cadets for several years and camped at the Calgary Sarcee Army Camp. George also belonged to the Baby Beef Club and showed an animal nine times. In 1947 he moved to Calgary and attended SAIT taking Industrial Electricity. Upon completion, George worked for Calgary Power at Seebe and then later the City of Calgary retiring in 1988 after a total of thirty-eight years of service. George enjoyed camping, fishing and hiking, completing a hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon while in his fifties. He was an avid volunteer, giving his valuable time to the 1988 Winter Olympics, Calgary Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and the Foothills Hospital just to name a few. For the last twenty years, he has faithfully walked four kilometers, every morning before breakfast, rain or shine. George was a kind and gentle man who was loved by all who knew him. The Hurst family would like to thank the Foothills Medical Centre, in particular the staff on Unit 61, for the exceptional care received.
