Leah STEINMAN

STEINMAN, Leah (1908 - 2009) Leah Steinman, in her 101st year, died peacefully, on February 13, 2009 at the Ottawa General Hospital, after a brief illness. Leah was the last surviving child of Hyman and Molly Steinman, the last of her generation. She was predeceased by sisters Sarah (Aaron), Minnie and Freda as well as brothers Moses, Benjamin, Henry and Jack. Leah was born in 1908 in the village of Chipowicz, just outside of Kiev in what is now the Ukraine. She came to Canada in 1910 with her parents and two older siblings. Devoted to her family, she worked tirelessly to help support them, initially working in the family business in the Byward Market and followed by a long career with the Public Service of Canada. Leah will be lovingly remembered for her strength, hard work and determination. She was a tremendous source of inspiration to her extended family which includes countless cousins and three generations of nephews and nieces, scattered across many points around the globe. Funeral Service will be held graveside at the Jewish Community Cemetery, Bank Street on Sunday, February 15th at 1 p.m. There will be no Shiva. Donations in Leah's memory can be made to the Leah, Freda and Henry Steinman Fund, care of the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation. The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to the staff at Hillel Lodge, where Leah lived happily for the last six years of her life. Leah was a proud and tireless founding supporter of Hillel Lodge since its inception. The family particularly wishes to thank Leah's primary caregiver Pat Guthrie, who was with Leah for close to 7 years and more recently Beryl, Helen, Maylen and Joy.
