MACKIE, Doug Doug Mackie passed away Sunday, March 15 after suffering a stroke. He was surrounded by family and friends. Doug is survived by his wife Betty, son William, sisters Helen (Murray), Linda (Ron), Wendy (Mike), brothers John (Elaine) and Davie (Trish), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Billy, niece Carma and parents Bill and Ethel. Doug was born in Chilliwack, BC, but moved to Cranbrook at twenty to begin a career in the hospitality industry. That led to a thirty-one year career as Manager of the Town & Country Hotel, which he made famous, in Calgary. Doug, the "unofficial mayor of Forest Lawn", was an avid golfer, hockey player and sports fan. Doug most enjoyed the social aspects of all his activities, sometimes more than the activities themselves. The many friendships he had were the most important part of his life. Doug was always there for you. He never let you down. He may have been the kindest man ever! Doug was cremated with a few of his favourite things including his beloved Flames hat and blankie. At the wishes of Doug and the family there will be no Service. Doug's organs were donated and a private Cremation followed. Special thanks to the ICU at the Foothills for their exceptional compassion and help. A Celebration of Doug's Life will be held at the Town & Country Hotel at 1825 - 50 Street S.E. Calgary on Friday, March 20 from 2:30 - 8:30 p.m. Friends are encouraged to pop in to enjoy and celebrate Doug's extraordinary life. Calgary Flames jerseys are encouraged. Doug always hated funerals and black suits. Donations may be made in Doug's memory to the Foothills Hospital ICU. Published in the Calgary Herald from 3/18/2009- 3/19/2009
