CORKERY, John William Q.C. - (Knight Commander of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great). Died peacefully May 19, 2009, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre in his 88th year. Born 12 Sep 1921. After graduating from St. Michael's College, University of Toronto in 1943, he volunteered for service and trained with the armoured corps at Camp Borden. He entered the Thirteenth Field Regiment supporting the Queen's Own Infantry in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany then volunteered for the Pacific before landing in Canada on VJ Day. He entered Osgoode Hall Law School in September 1945 and was called to the Bar in 1948. Having articled with the Attorney General for Ontario. He practiced law in Peterborough for more than fifty years: with his brother-in- law James F. Dunn, as a sole practitioner, with his son Christopher and finally as counsel with Lockington Lawless Fitzpatrick. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1959, was recognized as a Specialist in Civil Litigation and served as Deputy Judge of the Small Claims Court. In 1998 he received a lifetime membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada. He was also Founding President of the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club. Survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Bennery Jeanne (née Perreault) and beloved children, Christopher (Lee-Ann), Sean, Johanna Schady (Martin), Ceara, Jonathan (Allison) and Katie Velasquez (John); his devoted grandchildren Hannah, Joseph, Benedict, Peter, Daniel, Léonie, Anastasia, John Paul, David, Jacques, Martin, John, Julian, John Vincente and William; his dear sister, Catherine Maloney and many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by his parents John Richard Corkery and Gertrude Somers, his sisters Margaret Dunn and Nora Brown and his brother Richard. Many thanks to Doctors Roger Holmes, John Beamish, Paul Marrocco, Maria Magliocco, Jonathan Irish, Andrew Hope, the caring staff at Princess Margaret Hospital and the Palliative Care Team at PRHC. Visitation at DUFFUS FUNERAL HOME, 431 George Street South, Peterborough (705-745-4612) from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday. (Parish Prayers 3:30 p.m. Thursday). Funeral Mass in the CATHEDRAL OF ST. PETER-IN- CHAINS, Peterborough, on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 10 a.m. Reverend Luis Lapinid officiating. Interment St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family would welcome contributions to Wayside Academy, Peterborough or the Canadian Cancer Society. 11517696
