LUNNEY, Sister Mary (Sister Alphonse Marie) - On Monday, October 26th, 2009, Sister Mary Lunney died peacefully at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough, Ontario in the 61st year of her religious life. She was the daughter of the late Edward Lunney and Elizabeth O'Neill of Pakenham, Ontario. Along with the members of her religious Congregation, Sister Mary leaves to mourn her three brothers, Edward (Yvonne), Frank (Margaret), Al (Jeri) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Betty Anne and her brothers Gerard, John, and Thomas. Sister Mary entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15th, 1949. She became an accomplished musician with an A.R.C.T. Teacher's Certificate in piano and many years teaching music in Lindsay and Almonte, Ontario. After attending Peterborough Teacher's College, she taught at Immaculate Conception School in Peterborough and Annunciation School in Edmonton, Alberta. Sister Mary completed a year of study in Rome and then returned to Canada to assume the position of Congregational Formation Director for eight years followed by three years as Religious Education resource teacher with the Lanark, Leeds, Grenville School Board. She left this work when she was appointed General Secretary of the Congregation, a position she held for the next thirteen years. Sister Mary was known as a person who was welcoming, gracious and quiet and always ready to serve whoever came to her door. In retirement she moved to Ottawa where she did volunteer work with the homeless (Shepherds of Good Hope) as well as ministering to her family and the Sisters who visited Ottawa. She moved back to Mount St. Joseph in the fall of 2008. Visitation at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough will be Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mount St. Joseph on Thursday, October 29th at 10:30 a.m. This will be followed by interment at Highland Park Cemetery in Peterborough.
