ONGLEY, ARCHDEACON F.G. ONGLEY MEMORIAL SERVICE, St. John’s Church, Peterborough Sunday, October 6, 2002 @ 2:30 PM "Archdeacon Fred" Ongley died peacefully in Comox, BC surrounded by family on April 28, 2002 at age 90. The Ongley family lived for many years in the Peterborough area, considering it their family home. Fred was rector of St. John’s Anglican Church (1952-62) and Archdeacon of Peterborough. On retirement from St. George’s, Oshawa in 1977, he and his wife Frances moved to their cottage in Buckhorn. When Frances died in Peterborough in 1992, after being nursed by Fred for a year, the Archdeacon became honorary assistant at St. John’s and Priest-in-charge in Lakefield. Archdeacon Ongley was very involved in many boards and committees in Peterborough, especially those involved with children and families. He was Chair of the Board of CAS for some years. His sensitive pastoral care, community involvement, inspired preaching and deep compassion for people of all ages and all walks of life made him a beloved gentle friend for many citizens of Peterborough and surrounding area. He returned to Peterborough on many occasions, the last being in May 2001 when he preached a memorable sermon at the 175th Anniversary of St. John’s. Fred married Agnes Simpson Nov. 1994 in Ottawa and moved to Comox, BC near family. Again he nursed a beloved wife through a long illness. Agnes died in 2000. Deeply loved, Archdeacon Ongley is survived by his sons Edwin (Martine) of Montreal and George ÔBritt’ (Emily) of Courtenay, BC; daughter Catherine Veale (Ron) of Whitehorse, YT; foster sons Waldo Hindle (Ruth) of Calgary & Eric Choi (Stella) of Bangkok; ten grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and his brother, Albert of Kingston.
