Dr. Passed away in his sleep at home on January 18, 2002. Beloved husband of Cathryn (Olmsted) Laver for more than 50 years, he is proudly remembered by sons Kent and wife Christine, Ross and wife Kathy, and Barrie and wife Joan. He will be dearly missed by grandchildren Ariel, Sandra, Claire, Danielle, Benjamin, Erica, Alexandra and Andrew. He was born on December 11, 1918, in Regina to the late Elsye Laver and Kenneth Cooke, who died when Bryan was four. After what he recalled as a "roller coaster" childhood, he enrolled in The Royal Winnipeg Rifles in May, 1937, served in England and Italy during the war and attained the rank of Major in 1949. In the postwar years he both studied and taught psychology part-time, achieving his PhD in 1963. He was released from the army the following year on being appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology of Carleton University, where he taught until 1992. His dedication showed in the university's annual faculty appraisals. A typical assessment concluded, "The instructor and his energy, enthusiasm and unique sense of humour, said students, was the best part of his course." A thoughtful, quiet, caring man, modest to a fault, he lived as he died: peacefully and with great dignity. Family and friends will gather to remember Bryan on Monday January 21st at 2 p.m. at Tubman Funeral Homes, Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Rd. (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd.) A service will be held in the chapel at 3 p.m. Donations in his memory can be made to the Salvation Army or the Humane Society of Ottawa Carleton. The Ottawa Citizen, 20-01-2002
